Paul CASTLEBERRY was born on 1 Mar 1761 in Tar River in Virginia (Now N.C.).⁽³⁶⁰¹⁾⁽³⁶⁰²⁾ He died on 16 Jun 1841 in Castleberry Plan, Woodruff, SC.⁽³⁶⁰³⁾⁽³⁶⁰⁴⁾ Paul and Nancy lived on a plantation in Woodruff, Spartanburg District, South Carolina. He was a farmer.

When Paul was young his family moved to Orange County, N.C. and from there to Newberry District, N.C. -then to Richmond County,Georgia where he lived (when at home) until the seige of Savannah. Then he moved to Spartanburg District, S.C.

Paul served as a sergeant during the American Revolutionary War, and according to his war records at one time he fought under the command of the renown General Anthony Wayne. The Revolutionary War Record Pension Application File W27664 is on reposit with the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The battle of Cowpens Chapter, NSDAR (see page 22, NSDAR Magazine for January 1973) has marked gravesite of Paul Castleberry in appropriate ceremonies. (See page 8l8, "The Gamp Tree", for January-February-March 1973.

Paul, along with William Castleberry and John Castleberry is found in the 1790 census of Spartanburg County, S.C. He probably married his first wife in South Carolina. Her name is uncertain. However they had eleven children.

Paul is buried on the Old Castleberry plantation. His grave received a marker with appropriate ceremony from the DAR. Parents: William CASTLEBERRY and Sarah MARTIN.

death of Paul is at Great Valley Baptist Church near Paoli Chester Co.
(on file at Philadelphia Historical Society.) He was assessed 62 acres in
Providence township in 1734, being listed as Paul Castleberry. He
signed a petition for a minister at St. James Episcopal Chrch at Evansburg
as Paul Castlebury, a record of which is in the history of old St. David's
Church at Radnor (Philadelphia Historical Society). Apparently he left
the Mennonite sect and early on he lived in Chester Co. and later moved
back to Providence township.

His will headed New Providence, Philadelphia Co., and signed Paul
Castleberry was proved April 17, 1748 at Salford, and recorded in Book G.,
pg. 246, Philadelphia.

Paul is progenitor through his son Richard of the Georgia-Alabama line
of Castleberrys, and progenitor through his son Jacob of the Evansburg
line of Casselberrys.
